Hello! I see you get a lot of Navy questions so I was wondering if I could ask one too?.. I was supposed to sign my contract two years ago.. But I didn't go in because I was in love. Now the relationship has ended and I can't stop thinking about the Navy. I'm 23 and I'm wondering if I screwed myself for starting late.. But my main question is.. At any point have you regretted joining?
Hey! First of all, 23 is not late! I have a lot of friends who joined that age, and even much older.
Of course I’ve regretted joining, at times. It’s challenging, frustrating, you have to work with (and work for) some real fucking morons.
But on the other hand, it’s challenging, you’re always learning, you’re working towards advancements (more pay!) and retirement. You’re working towards the GI Bill for college, which you can pass on to your spouse or children if you don’t use it yourself. You get free medical care, guaranteed housing and meals, and you get to travel the world and meet people from all over the country and the world. You will learn so much about yourself and the world, I promise. I mentioned you work with assholes, but you’re also going to meet the best friends you’ll ever have in your life.
So. Yes, I regret it sometimes. But there’s a reason I’ve been in for almost 12 years. I could have gotten out already, but I reenlisted. Actually, I did get out for six months between active duty and joining the reserves - I missed it enough to come back in. Overall, it was the best decision 17-year-old me ever made.
Let me know what you decide, and if you need any more advice or guidance, I’m here for you!
